The ‘Yeni Dzade’ Street

The "Yeni Dzade" street, (today's street ‘Macedonia’) was made especially for the visit of the penultimate (35th) Turkish Sultan Mehmed V Reshad to Skopje. The street was officially opened in June 1911. At the time, the train station was located outside the city (a few meters away the current Old Railway Station), and the city was practically beginning  with the Stone Bridge. But, the "Yeni Dzade" (or "New Street") immediately became an important and prestigious area. Shortly afterwards, it was renamed after the predecessor of Mehmed Reshad, i.e. ‘Sultan Hamid Street’. During the First World War it was called ‘Archduke Ferdinand’, in 1922 - ‘King Peter’, whereas in 1942 it got the name ‘King Boris’. After the release it was named ‘Marshal Tito’ the longest-serving name, and finally in 1993 it was renamed again – ‘Macedonia Street’.
The street began at the train station, passed across the Stone Bridge, through the Bazaar to the Vilayet residence. Another street cut earlier when the train station opened, followed it in parallel.
