Sultan Murat's Medres

The mosque and the medres were built in the second half of 1436 by Sultan Murat II, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror’s father. The inscription above the front door indicates that the mosque was damaged in a fire in 1537 or 1538. In 1542 Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent ordered its reparement afteer passed through Skopje to get to Vienna. The powerful donor made a generous donation to the mosque and all its priests and officials, and the villages of Kozl,e and Gorno and Dolno Vodno were its waqf.
This mosque was burned down for the second time in a major fire in October 1689, during the Habsburg invasion. Undoubtedly, the fire destroyed both the imaret and the medres, as well as the other main and additional buildings around it.
